Twinsie Tuesday: Chevron Tape Mani

17 Apr

Tuesdays feel like they come around more often than just once a week. This week we’re all playing with tape and busting out some nail art. Some of us dabble in nail art quite a bit and some not quite so much. It should be fun to see what everyone presents today.

Back in November I posted this Chevron Nail Tutorial. It has gotten a lot of traffic and has been pinned many, many times on Pinterest, so I’m capitalizing on it’s popularity. I loved that mani and have been wanting to do another one ever since. This is the perfect opportunity.

You would think that after borrowing pinking shears from my neighbor to do the first one I would’ve gone out an bought a pair for myself, but no. This time around I borrowed a pair of shears from my mom. If you look closely at the two manicures you can see that the shapes of the chevrons are a little different as a result of the two different pairs of shears I used. Each time I would look at pinking shears when I was out shopping, I couldn’t decide which shape I liked better and wanted to spend my money on. I have decided that I definitely like this shape better. It’s a lot sharper. Maybe I’ll just “forget” to return my mom’s.

I was undecided about which colors I wanted to use. I kept coming up with combinations that had grey in them. I love grey and all, but my last one was grey and yellow so I wanted to do something different than that. I texted my interior design student sister for her opinions. We can all thank her for inspiring this color combination.

Can anyone guess what color my blue is? Not a very hard riddle, I’m sure. Yes, China Glaze For Audrey. Such a fabulous color and versatile blue. The white is China Glaze White on White. As a side note it anyone’s interested, I’ve been using Poché top coat lately and am loving it! I haven’t used it on any seriously detailed nail art yet to see how it performs, but so far, it may be my new “go to” top coat.

Be sure the check out all the tape manis today:

Easter Chevron

9 Apr

Happy Easter (yesterday.)  This is the manicure I wore for Easter. I wasn’t up for any crazy nail art of Easter bunnies and eggs so I went with a chevron mani done in Easter colors.

The combination of these colors and this design scream 8Os me.  It reminds me of some super tacky bedroom set that you would see in a cliche 8Os movie.  That said, I really love it!  My purple is OPI Do You Lilac It?, pink is OPI Pink Friday and the green is Jordana Mint Candy.  This is the first chevron mani of this variety that I’ve done.  I’ve seen many of them floating around out there and really liked them so I gave it a try.  It’s very pastely and springy.

Nude Chevron

5 Apr

I’m a tad bit disappointed in this mani.  Okay, let’s be honest, tad bit is an understatement.  I flat out don’t like this manicure.  Why post it then, right?  Well, we all have epic failures here and there.  I just wanted to show  you that, despite what you may have heard, I’m not perfect. 😉  I wanted to do more than one stripe, but ran in to some logistical issues.

I found some tip guide stickers that I bought years and years ago and decided I would use them for this chevron mani.  Two stickers wouldn’t fit on any of my nails.  My nails are pretty long in these pictures and there was just no way to put more than one sticker on there.  Darn.  Chevron fail.

I was shooting for a very neutral, nude color scheme.  I used OPI Swedish Nude and Jordana Chiffon.  I don’t think I’m a fan of Jordana Chiffon.  I’ve used it for a few different nail art designs, but as a polish itself, it does not compliment my skin tone.  This was just a disappointing manicure on all counts.

Chevron Nail Tutorial

30 Nov

Last week I guest posted on See Sarah Swatch with this awesome chevron mani. I promised a tutorial so here you go.
*Please excuse my dry skin.  I took off one mani and started into the next without moisturizing between.

I started with a white base of Sinful Colors Snow Me White.  The yellow I used is Sinful Colors Unicorn and it takes several coats to get good coverage.  It’s tends to be really streaky if you don’t do 4+ coats so to remedy that I put it over white.  One good coat of Unicorn over Snow Me White was pretty good.

I used some pinking shears to cut lots of small, little strips of scotch tape.  You have to make sure you line your zig zags up when you’re cutting.  Wait until your polish is totally dry before you put tape on it.  If you want to use a fast drying top coat to speed up the process, go for it.  Stick the strip to your hand a few times to get most of the sticky off the tape before you stick it to your nail.  If you use full strength sticky tape, it will likely pull your polish off.  Line the strips up to your liking.  I used tweezers to help with this since the strips were so small.  Press them down firmly and use an orange stick to get into the sides of your nails.

Apply one coat of your second color, blow on your nail for a few seconds and apply another coat to get full coverage.  While your polish is still wet, carefully take your tape off.  Put on your top coat and you’re done!

This is an example of what will happen if your base color is not completely dry before you start sticking tape to it.  Beautiful, right?

I love this chevron mani.  I guess I will have to get myself a pair of pinking shears so I don’t have to borrow them from my neighbor the the next time I want to try this.  The grey polish is Sally Hansen Wet Concrete.  Let me know if you have any questions.
