Faux Shine

25 Aug

What would you do if you ran out of your super shiny top coat or just didn’t think it was shiny enough?  Paint on your own shine.

It was kind of a crazy idea, but fun to try.  I polished my nails with Julep Viola, a deep raisin colored creme.  I only applied two coats, but should have used three.  You can see some streaky spots on my ring finger.  Then with a small detail brush and a white polish (don’t remember which one I used) I added on a highlight to each nail.  Even though it seemed redundant and unnecessary, I used a glossy top coat.  It looks nice, but the faux highlight and the actual highlights from the lights battle each other a bit.

So I added a matte top coat.  Much better!  First I used the Sephora matte top coat and it hardly did anything.  Disappointing.  I switched to NYC Matte Me Crazy which worked much better.  I think this design is really fun.  It almost looks cartoonish.

What do you think of my matte, shiny nails?

Neon Moustaches

24 Aug

Are moustaches still cool?  I think I’m still okay.  I’ve been wanting to do neon moustaches for a while now and just kept putting it off and pushing it further down the “to do” list.  Yesterday I noticed that the leaves on the trees in my backyard are starting to turn already.  That means autumn is almost here so I’d better get all my neon manis done.

I originally planned to do white nails with neon moustaches, but I’m glad I changed my mind.  I’m loving the neon skittles with the white staches.

My white moustaches are acrylic.  The blue is Sinful Colors Savage.  My pink is NYX Girls Pink Strawberry.  The green is NYX Girls Pimp My Nails.  The orange is another NYX Girls, Hot Orange and the purple is Milani Rad Purple.  Pimp My Nail is actually a bit of a jelly.  I didn’t realize that until I was doing coat after coat and still seeing VNL.  Maybe I’ll do some syrup nails with it.

I moustache you a question?  😉  How do you like my neon staches?

Shimmer Liana

23 Aug

I’ve got another beautiful Shimmer Polish for you today.  These glitters seriously pack a punch.

Shimmer Liana is a gorgeous blue; many different shades of blue with a few flecks of other colors mixed in here and there.  I layered it over CND Asphalt, a blue toned dark grey.  Over Asphalt I only needed one coat of Liana for superior coverage.

My pinkie is just two coats of Liana (no Asphalt underneath).  There is so much glitter packed in to each bottle of Shimmer polish, a base color is not necessary, just optional.

It’s so reflective and shiny that, even without the metallic label on the bottle in the shot, my camera had a hard time focusing.  There was just so much sparkle going on it couldn’t figure out where to focus.  Be sure to head on over to Shimmer Polish and check out the rest of the collection.

*This polish was sent to me for review by Shimmer Polish.

Paw Prints

22 Aug

To start, notice the new follow buttons in my sidebar?  Top Coat It is now on Twitter and Pinterest and I decided to add a button for my Tumblr as well.  All sorts of ways to follow Top Coat It now.  Pick your favorite or use them all!

This idea has been on my “To Do” list for a while now.  I finally decided I was just going to do it already.

I’ll be honest and say that I’m underwhelmed with this mani.  The picture in my head was much cuter.  I think it would have been better if I’d used a blue base color as opposed to the super delicate lilac color of Orly Decades of Dysfunction.  Pretty color, but not right for this mani.

My paw prints are Color Club Nouveau Vintage.  I’m happy with that choice.  Oh well.  I guess it could have been worse.  I figured I’d post it anyway so the time I took to do it and photograph it wasn’t a total waste.

Twinsie Tuesday: Floral

21 Aug

It’s Tuesday again, Ladies!  Today we’re going floral.  When I think of floral, I can’t help but imagine tacky wallpaper and old lady dresses.  I don’t know why.  Floral in no way has to be a dated, matronly pattern.

I loved the roses I did a week or two ago so much, that I decided to do them again.

I used a couple new polishes for this mani.  My base color is Julep Alyson, a nice almond colored creme.  I made my roses and leaves with China Glaze Liquid Leather.

Then added Julep Molly, a classic red creme, to add some pop.  To lighten up the black leaves a bit, I added some thinned Alyson to them.

I love the neutral and black combo.  Definitely need to play with it more.

Be sure the check out all the other manis today:
